What do I need to have ready on the day of sale?
Once you've made an appointment to have your vehicle collected, you'll need to have some documents ready. This is so your chosen dealer can check the validity of your car, transfer the money into your bank account, and complete the transfer of ownership. By having these ready in advance of your car handover, you'll ensure the fastest and most hassle-free experience on the day.
You’ll need to have the following items ready:
If you are the registered keeper of the vehicle:
Item Type | Required Documents/Items | Notes |
Vehicle Documents | V5C vehicle registration document (your logbook) | Essential for transferring ownership. |
Vehicle Documents | MOT certificate | Only required if your car is three or more years old. |
Vehicle Documents | Service Record Book (Service History), car handbook, all spare keys | Also include locking wheel nuts, radio and key codes (if applicable). |
Personal ID & Finance | Photo ID (Driving licence or passport) | Must be the ID of the registered keeper. Used to verify identity against the V5C. |
Personal ID & Finance | Proof of Address | Utility bill, bank statement, or council tax statement. The address must match the address on the V5C or the Drivers License. |
Personal ID & Finance | Finance Authority | A letter from your finance company confirming the final settlement figure (if applicable). |
Logistics | Your UK bank details | Required so the dealer to process the payment to you. |
Logistics | Fuel / Charge | Ensure there is half a tank of fuel, or enough so the fuel light is not on. If you have an electric vehicle, please make sure it is fully charged. |
If you are not the registered keeper of the vehicle:
All the items above, plus:
- Written authorisation from the registered keeper that you are able to sell the car.
- Photo ID (driving licence or passport) of the registered keeper.
