What should I do with the insurance following a bereavement?
If the vehicle is currently insured
Please contact the insurance company to discuss continuing or cancelling the policy. The process varies by provider, but they will guide you through their specific policies and terms.
Contact the insurance company
- Notify them of the policyholder’s death
- Discuss options for continuation or cancellation of the policy
- Have policy documentation and a copy of the death certificate ready
Consider fees and arrears
Check with the provider about any potential fees or arrears due upon cancellation.
Continuing the policy
Some providers may allow you to continue the policy temporarily – for example, until the car is sold.
If not, you will need to SORN or separately tax and insure the vehicle
Named drivers
Even if you are a named driver, insurance may become invalid after the policyholder's death
Confirm this with the insurance company before driving the vehicle
If the vehicle is not currently insured
You have 2 options, depending on your preference:
- SORN the vehicle
- Declare the vehicle off-road (SORN) if you can store it in a private space (e.g., driveway, garage).
- Tax and insure the vehicle
- For short-term use, consider temporary insurance providers. You may need to transfer the V5C logbook to your name.
As well as contacting the insurance company, it is important you tell the DVLA about a death. Read more about how to tell the DVLA about a death.
