Can I sell a car on Motorway on behalf of someone else?
Yes – but we'll need some extra documents to make sure the sale is authorised correctly.
Once these documents are uploaded and checked by Motorway’s Documents Team, you (the registered keeper) can be set up as the payee for the vehicle sale.
Please note that we can't complete your sale without these documents.
Required documents
A letter of authorisation
- This needs to be completed and signed by the registered owner
- Contact documents@motorway.co.uk for our sample letter
Photo of registered owner’s driving licence
- You can send an alternative photographic ID, such as a passport
- You need to send this together with proof of address, such as a utility or council tax bill, letter from HMRC, or bank statement dated within the last 3 months
- Without this documentation, the registered keeper cannot receive payment for the vehicle
If you are selling a company vehicle
We’ll need a signed letter of authorisation and a form of ID from a Company Director.
If you’re selling a vehicle on probate – on behalf of someone who has passed away
- Our Documents Team can support you with this. Call them on 0203 885 9291
- See our FAQ Can I sell a vehicle on probate?
Where to upload your documents
These documents can all be uploaded to your Motorway profile.
If you experience difficulties, please email copies to documents@motorway.co.uk along with your vehicle’s registration number.
If you are not the vehicle owner because you are selling a financed car, please see our FAQ How do I sell my financed car on Motorway?
